KRABI TRAVEL GUIDE - KOH LANTA, KRABI THAILAND

Koh Phi Phi | Koh Lanta | Ao Nang Beach | Railay Bay

Lanta Island
Although less scenic than some other areas in the province, Koh Lanta is perhaps the most idyllic area available in Krabi.

While lacking the towering karsts, Lanta offers travelers something that is growing increasingly difficult to find on Phi Phi or Pranang: peace and quiet.

With over 19 pristine, tree-lined beaches, remarkably friendly residents, and inexpensive accommodations, Lanta Island is the perfect place to go for a serene, relaxing vacation

Lanta Islands National Park
Covers 152 square Kilometers of Lanta Islands. This island forms the most southern district of Krabi province. It was known long ago by its name in the Malay language, Pulao Satak, which means Long Beach Island. Later, so many Thais, both Buddhist and Muslim, came to live on the island that there seemed to be a million eyes, which is what some people think Lanta means in Thai.

Others hold that the name is corrupted from Javanese "lan-tas", and means a fish grill (which is built of wood with a square grill on top where the fish are set in a circle). Several islands are in the National Park:

Lanta Yai Island
is where the District & National Park offices are located. The island geography is mountainous and rugged, especially near the southern tip; some beaches are gravelly, others have fine white sands. A clan of Chao Ley, or "Sea Gypsies" are resident on Koh Yao Yai and they preserve many of their ancient customs and ceremonies; e.g. the setting of ceremonial boats adrift to bring good luck and prosperity on the full moon nights of the sixth and eleventh month This and other features of their lives are open to view. To visit the island take a regularly scheduled ferry from Ban Hua Hin Pier in Tambon Koh Klahng, Bor Muang Pier in Tambon Sai Kao or Jao Fah Pier in Krabi Town.

Lanta Noi Island
Lanta Noi used to be a community of local people in the old days. The old life style and traditional-styled- houses can still be seen in this island, offering somewhat charming atmosphere.

Weather
Weather in Krabi is typically that of the tropical monsoon, providing the province with just two seasons, the hot season from November to April, and the rainy season from May to October. Monsoon winds, which change according to season, blow from the southeast, the southwest, and the northeast. Temperatures for the year range between 16.9 and 37.3 degrees Celsius; yearly rainfall averages 2,586.5 millimeters.

Most visitors prefer to visit Koh Lanta from November to April due to the end of monsoons, allowing the bright blue sky and good weather. The average temperature varies from 24 to 34?C.

Klong Kaong, Lanta Island

This beach, 2 km south of Phra Ae, is extremely peaceful, and has excellent accommodation at bargain prices.

Although the food is not quite as good as at Phra Ae, the beaches are isolated, tranquil and serene.

Kantiang, Lanta Island
Towards the southern tip of the island, Kantiang beach is one of the most beautiful on Koh Lanta.
Although accommodations are only average, the sparkling sands and iridescent aquamarine waters more than compensate.
There is also excellent snorkeling available in the surrounding area.

Klong Jark, Lanta Island
This is the southernmost beach on Lanta, and although rather average by most standards, the proximity to completely deserted Mai Phai beach, and the national park make this a good place to stay. Also, there is a small waterfall and a lagoon nearby.

Klong Nin, Lanta Island
Like nearly all the beaches on Lanta, Klong Nin is isolated and quiet. Fine, sandy beaches are essentially all one will encounter here, and the accommodations are adequate.
Again, this is not the place to go if you want to go jet-skiing or para-sailing, but perfect if you want to read a book on a beautiful beach.

Phra Ae, Lanta Island
At the northern end of Lanta, this beach is known for its fine sand and quickly shelving coastline.

Where to stay: Accommodation at Phra Ae are extremely affordable, and the food is sumptious. Like most of the beaches on Lanta Island, recreational activities are few and far between.

Klong Dao, Lanta Island
This beach is the most populous of those offered on Lanta, with several bungalows at very reasonable prices.
Located 2 km from the Saladan pier, this beach offers visitors clean, sparkling sand, tepid, translucent waters, and excellent views of the surrounding areas.
Recreational activities are limited, but there is plenty of sand and sun to go around, making this a wonderfully relaxing and stress-free vacation spot.
